Neuroimaging continues to expand rapidly in the range of technology and its applications to clinical neurology. For this reason, there is a need to update the knowledge in this field for all interested in the study of the nervous system. This first volume covers specifically a description of imaging techniques and imaging of the adult brain. It aims at providing a comprehensive view of the field of neuroimaging, useful both to beginners in various related fields and to specialists desiring to update or refresh their knowledge base on neuroimaging.
This volume approaches the topic of neuroimaging extensively, and images are used profusely, many of them in color. Input from leading experts the world over has been collated to provide the broadest view of neuroimaging as it currently stands. For a number of neurological disorders imaging is not only critical for diagnosis but also for monitoring the effect of therapies, and the entire field is moving from curing diseases to preventing them. In many instances - such as imaging the deposition of beta-amyloid in the brain years before the onset of symptoms in Alzheimer’s disease - imaging is the critical tool to depict neurobiological changes that are not yet clinically overt. Genetic risk and imaging are beginning to combine to produce a new powerful paradigm in preventing neurological disorders. Most of the information contained in this volume still reflects the newness of this approach, but also points to this new horizon in the approach to neurological disorders.
