Army Life in a Black Regiment is a book by American author and solider, Thomas Wentworth Higginson, first published in 1870. The book recounts his time spent as a colonel of the 1st South Carolina Volunteers, the first federally authorized black regiment, from 1862 to 1864 and his experiences with African American soldiers. Higginson was active in the American Abolitionism movement and was also a member of the Secret Six who supported John Brown. After the war, he devoted most of his time fighting for the rights of freed people, women, and other disfranchised peoples. Higginson is also remembered as a literary mentor to the poet Emily Dickinson.
